I thought I would share more of the short story that I am currently finishing. Let me know what you think!
Drying myself as best as I could, I pushed the water droplets off my coat as I came in under the small roof provided by the bar. The young man looked at me and smiled slightly. Being polite and in a different time, I smiled back. When he came into the light, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was James Dean! This was not the same James that I had seen in pictures or read about. Tears were threatening to come down his eyes. He had small circles under his eyes telling me that probably the insomnia he had was present.
“Want a smoke?” he offered as I stared at the box of Lucky Strikes he shoved in my face. Declining, I shook my head. “You don’t smoke… So, what’s your name?” he then asked as he looked at me, leaning over closer, offering me a close up of what he looked like.
“Mira, and you are…?” I offered my hand as a puff of his cigarette smoke passed me.
“James Dean. Pleasure to meet you.” He grinned as he took the cigarette from his mouth, then flicking the ashes to the side of the street. “What brings you here? You don’t look like the type of girl who’d come to a bar.”
James Dean gave me a once over! His eyes never left mine as I spoke to him. This had to be some sort of dream, because I was meeting my lifelong idol. “I was here with a friend, but she went home due to the rain. I still wanted to walk around. You looked angry there when you pushed your friend. Is everything okay?” I asked as he came closer. At first, I was rather intimidated by his body being closer to mine, but after a few minutes it didn’t bother me. He had this comfortable way of not doing it, so as not to scare someone away.
Grinning shyly, he looked down to the floor, scratching the back of his head. “Nah, it wasn’t his fault. My father missed some commercial I was in. Got my first acting gig and he wasn’t there to watch it. Says he missed it.”
I had heard the rumors that things were not right with his father. Between his reaction and admitting his feelings, I could see that the rumors were true. I reached out and touched his hand, looking him straight in the eyes. “You did a great job in that commercial. I’m sure of it. Besides, I have a feeling that you are going to do well and be famous one day.”
Laughing, he took my hand, kissing it at the knuckles. “You’re a sweetheart. That made me feel better. Famous, huh? Me, famous? You don’t even know me.”
“I know a good person when I see one. My father always said you could tell by someone’s eyes how great their desires were.” Before I could even finish, James had flicked the cigarette, then throwing his arms around me. His embrace was warm and loving. I missed hugs, especially those of my father.
“You okay, Jimmy?” his friend said as he came out. James nodded, yelling at him to bring his camera. James then grabbed me, pulling me into a hug and having the camera go off.
“Let me take you home,” he said, grabbing my hand as we walked down the street. Even more shocking, I got to ride his motorcycle. The engine roared to life as I yelled directions to James and held on for dear life. I was getting soaked the entire time, but I didn’t care. I was with James. My life couldn’t be more complete. As we reached the apartments, I slowly got off the bike, surprised at myself that I had done this. Ordinarily, I’d never get on a motorcycle. James leaned over and caressed my cheek. Before I could open my mouth to tell him what was to happen to him, he gave me a quick peck on the lips. I couldn’t let James walk away, not now.
Scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, books, pictures, and the occasional history magazines were strewn all over my bed. This is how I’d spent my afternoons after school when not interning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Between school, homework, and an internship, I led a pretty busy life. Sure, it wasn’t the glamorous life teenagers want, but it was as close to reaching my goals as I could get. The past year had been a year filled with tears and unhappiness. I’d lost my father to cancer. When he was diagnosed with cancer we all had a rough go of it. A history professor at New York University, he always saw the bright side of things. It wasn’t bright for Mom and me. A nurse stayed with my father as I came from school and while mom was at work. When the nurse’s shift was over, Mom and I would help.
Dad and I would sit in our living room together. Cuddled up, we would watch old movies together. Dad always liked old movies especially those from the fifties. His favorite? Rebel Without A Cause starring James Dean. Dad loved James Dean and that of course is where I got my admiration for him. I think Daddy always liked James, not only because his name was also James, but also for what he represented. James Dean was the epitome of freedom and being carefree. Dad was a free-spirited person, but he was very dedicated to his studies since he started school. I guess that’s where I get it. Secretly Dad wanted to be like Dean in his youth; he never got the chance and never would.
I laughed, remembering the first time we sat down together to watch Rebel Without A Cause. I could remember Dad’s distinct laughter that just made you break into a smile or laugh with him. Dad was laughing because of the way my eyes seemed to pop out of my head when I saw the opening scene when Dean was drunk and laying on the ground. I saw the magnificence that Dad had told me about all those years. I understood why Dean was so popular and why he would continue to be. Dad patted my hand and leaned over to kiss me on the head. “I knew that you would like him.” From there every afternoon before Mom would get home was spent together cuddled up on the sofa watching old movies and talking about James Dean. Dad shared his books and movies about him with me. I got to know a side of my dad that even I had not known about. I loved my dad and this gave me something of his to hold on to after his death.
I remember back in the day when there were only CDs. I used to make mix CDs in order to keep me motivated with songs that inspired me to write poetry or that of a scene I needed for the novels I was writing. With technology constantly changing, the blessing of the MP3 players came along. Since then I have learned all I could in order to figure out how to use it and how to share my love of music with others out there. So it got me thinking how I could share how to create a playlist with songs that inspire and motivate all fellow writers write!

The greatest gift of all is giving to those in need!
How many times have we heard no funding available for schools? I am sure with today’s economy that we hear it all the time. When back to school was in session and parents were trying to buy for their kids, it was all over the news. Parents struggling to find items for their children. Parents had to shop/search for bargains in order for their child to progress at school. I found this ridiculous.
I know growing up myself there was not enough funding in my high school’s art department and yet it was the department that I thought understood me better than any other class I took. Unfortunately, the school is still in the same situation.
So I ask all the fellow writer’s looking at this blog, take a look at this great website DonorsChoose.org. It’s a website whose mission is to help people across the nation fund their projects. Projects range from helping build libraries for young children to getting new technology to teach young adults. The great thing about this site is you can search by state or your interests!
